At two weeks, some new parents report home life starting to feel more settled and new routines clicking into place; however, if you are not one of these lucky few, everything can start to feel a little overwhelming. One of the biggest factors in this is the lack of sleep. Whilst our little buddle of joy may look angelic when they are asleep, getting them there can seem hopeless for many parents. If you feel like this, please do not despair, we’ve all been there at some point (if a parent says they haven’t, there is a very good chance they are not being entirely truthful!) and we’ve come out the other side.
It is vital for mummy and baby to be getting as much rest as possible at this point, so here’s another sleeping tip to help in these early stages.
Tip 2 – Create some white noise
White noise can be your best friend when it comes to easing new babies to sleep and keeping them there for longer. It’s made up of constant low-impact sounds like a fan whirring, washing machines, car engines etc. There are even apps you can now get with a selection of noise options, so you can find the ones that your baby responds to best.
White noise comforts a newborn and helps them relax into deep sleep by mimicking many of the sounds they would have experienced in the womb - heart beating, stomach digesting, outside voices etc.
That’s why you may have noticed them settling quicker in a car or when the washing machine is on – it’s recreating that consistent noise that they got used to in the womb.
Of course, as tempting as it may be at times, you can’t drive them around in the car all day or keep the washing machine on permanently, so we’d recommend getting a white noise CD, MP3 or phone app to replicate these sounds.
